Meaning of All Those Email Symbols and Chat Shorthands Revealed! They are called emoticons when they express feelings which spoken words can convey but typed ones lack. You see them in emails and of course, chatrooms. When viewed sideways, they begin to make more sense. Tilt your head left and you'll get it.
