Viruses and worms are a fact of Internet life. As I type this, somewhere, some young kid is devising a way to make life miserable for the rest of us.

If you learn nothing else, remember this:

UNLESS YOU UPDATE YOUR VIRUS SOFTWARE REGULARLY - YOU HAVE NO PROTECTION.

Just because the computer came with a virus program, doesn't mean it will work on today's new virus or worm. With each new monster, updates are issued to fight it.

Can you get it free? Probably not. But the programs are inexpensive and well worth the price.

McAfee Security is what I recommend. That's what I use. If you install it on your computer, it will UPDATE ITSELF and watch as you use your computer for email, surfing etc. Best to intercept viruses and worms before thay can do their damage.

Let's look at how most of these worms work.

Usually they work off your address book. So yes, that means everybody you added is at risk, thanks to you.

Let's say I'm in your address book. candace@fiftiesweb.com You get the worm. It grabs my name from your address book and generates new emails with my addy in the FROM field. Me and everybody else you know. And you'll never know it happened. They will not appear in your OUT box.

This is how it "propogates" itself, gathering new email names from each victim.

People will think I sent them the nasty worm.

Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) attempt to detect these and bounce the emails as Undeliverable. Returns them to the person they think is the sender, the name the worm put in the FROM field.

Me and everybody you know.

There are some basics which can help.

Never open attachments from soneone you don't know. Will that keep you 100% safe. NO. Because as I just explained, an email with attachment can come from an infected friend whose address book has just been harvested.

Consider NOT using Microsoft Outlook Express. Many of these worms expressly target Outlook. It's popular and it bothers Bill Gates. Two reasons the kids are attracted to it.

I recommend EUDORA. It's free and most the pros use it. Pick Sponsored mode. It has small ads which pay for it, so you get it free.
